Hip Hop?

Sept 11, 2015

J.A.  I was always told not to hop or “bounce” out of the leg sweep. Schmidt seems to do well with a slight bounce. Is a slight hop or jump out of the back detrimental to technique or power?

Mac- It depends. You want the right amount. Look closely at all top throwers and they will have this hop to some degree. Some throwers are very flat and subtle with the hop up in the middle, or down-up, down (settle) out. This path helps with the rhythm which is vital. It also means getting the left foot down at the right time, not as fast as possible. Wolfgang always felt his biggest error was jumping too high in the middle. His longest throws were a flatter (for him) path/rhythm. You can’t have this rhythm and go as fast as you can through the circle.
